Kabale- Police in Kabale District have arrested a priest on charges of defiling a 16-year-old girl.
The police spokesman for Kigezi region, Mr Elly Maate, said the suspect, attached to Kikore Church of Uganda in Kamuganguzi Sub-county in Kabale District, was arrested on Thursday at around 3pm.
Mr Maate said the girl is a secondary school student in the same area where the arrested priest works. He said police were tipped off by the residents because the girl was frequenting the priest’s house at awkward hours.
“The police swung into action and the priest was immediately arrested. We are investigating the matter and the accused priest shall be taken to court,” Mr Maate said but did not give the date when the priest will be arraigned in court.
Call for action
The field coordinator Forum for Women in Democracy (Fowode) in Kabale District, Ms Florence Tumuheirwe, appealed to the police to speed up investigations so that the suspect is prosecuted.
“All of us must work as a team to protect girls from such abuses. It will be very sad if the priest committed such an offence.
Priests are God’s people that offer spiritual healing and not bringing agony to the under-privileged,” Ms Tumuheirwe said.
