Prison warders arrested over Pr Kiwedde’s escape

Rakai.

Three warders attached to Mutukula Government Prison are under investigation over the escape of Pastor William Muwanguzi.
Mr Muwanguzi, famously known as “Kiwedde”, escaped from detention at Mutukula prison in Rakai District last week. He was previously locked up at Masaka Prison but the authorities there transferred him to Mutukula early last month. The reasons for the transfer are unknown.

According to Mr Frank Baine, the Uganda Prisons spokesperson, the wardens have been handed over to police for investigations. “This is an eye opener to us to tighten security at all prisons,” he said in a telephone interview at the weekend.

He said Muwanguzi is believed to have fled to Tanzania through the Mutukula border point, but insists that efforts to re-arrest him are underway.

Ms Noah Sserunjogi, the greater Masaka region police spokesperson, said the investigation report will be submitted to the International Police directorate to enable them track Muwanguzi.
At the time of his escape, Muwanguzi was serving a five-year jail term.
