Probe army over robberies - RDC

KALUNGU. Kalungu Resident District Commissioner Abubaker Kaddunabbi has asked government to investigate allegations that some soldiers, who hail from the area, are allegedly involved in armed robberies in the district.
According to Mr Kaddunabbi, who chairs the district security committee, he has received numerous reports from residents that some of the armed robbers who attack travellers at night might be soldiers working with security agencies.

“There are reports that some of the armed robberies in the district are carried out by soldiers who hail from this area, while some residents point at soldiers attached to Bulakati Army detach,” the RDC said during an interview yesterday. “To get to the bottom of this, we want the security agencies to carry out thorough investigations,” he added.
Mr Kaddunabbi said most victims of these robberies are usually ambushed around the villages of Birongo, Kiti and Kiraga, which are located on the 30-kilometer stretch from Lukaya town to Miwula village in Lwabenge Sub-county. When Assistant Inspector General of Police Fred Yiga visited the area recently, residents complained that they lack a police post since the nearest one is located about 15 kilometers away.

Daily Monitor has learnt that between Lukaya Town and Miwula Village, there is no single police station which makes it easier for criminals to waylay residents along this stretch.
However, when contacted, Ms Diana Nandawula, the Southern Regional police spokesperson, said police have lately pitched camp in the area to closely monitor the situation and no suspects have been apprehended.
Mr Ninsiima Rwemijuma, the spokesperson Armoured Brigade barracks, refuted claims that some of their officers at Bulakati Army detach are engaged in armed robberies.
“...Whoever is making such sweeping allegations could be having hidden motives,” he said.
