Protests erupt in Mityana over area MP Zaake's condition

MITYANA. Fresh riots have erupted in Mityana Municipality this morning following reports that the health condition of their area MP Francis Zaake is deteriorating.

Currently, anti-riot police is engaging in running battles with angry protesters mainly youth who have since blocked roads and paralyzed traffic in the town and along the Kampala-Mityana-Mubende highway.

Motorists from Kampala are branching off from Wabigalo, utilising village routes to connect to Mubende.

Meanwhile, a photo obtained by Daily Monitor shows Mr Zaake in Lubaga hospital and from the photo, he appears to have been taken off life support machines as earlier reported.

Zaake is among the people including Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine who were brutally arrested, tortured and detained last Monday by security agents.

The riots in Mityana started at around 8:am after romours spread in the town that Zaake had died.

Following the romour, a few of his supporters started gathering at his constituency office and after being joined by others, they started  blocking roads using heavy logs and vehicle tyres. There were also similar protests in the town on Saturday.

MP Zaake’s father, Mr Emmanuel Ssembusi Butebi, said although his son’s condition is worrying, he was still alive.

“We are in touch with the doctors at Rubaga Hospital and they have not yet pronounced Zaake dead, what is true is that he is in critical condition and needs everyone’s prayers,” he said by telephone.

Currently, the town is under a security lock-down, with no one able to move in or out of the town. Businessmen have also hastily closed their shops and scampered for safety.

Wamala Regional Regional police spokesperson, Edward Ochom, who is currently moving around the town, has declined to comment about the situation, saying he is still gathering information.
