What you need to know:

  • Mr Mwijukye disagreed with Mr Turyabagyenyi saying there is no law in Uganda that stops certain people from visiting specific places on orders of some individuals
  • Bobi Wine said he was in Buhweju in good faith and did not want anybody to stop him since he likes talking to the youth

BUHWEJU- Police deployed in Buhweju District and staged road blocks on roads leading to the district to stop Kyadondo East MP, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine from attending the climax of Buhweju Unity Cup at Nsiika Play ground in Nsiika Town Council Buhweju District where he was invited by the area MP Francis Mwijukye.
Buhweju District Resident Commissioner, Mr Emmy Turyabagyenyi Katerea said they deployed on Sunday to stop Bobi Wine who has “specialised in abusing President Yoweri Museveni from accessing the district since he would mislead the youth with his politicking.”

‘’I liaised with Mr Mwijukye that the members of Parliament he is bringing must be friendly and relevant to the cause. First of all, this is a football competition, we do not want to politicise the competition and when you bring politicians to turn the good intention of football into politics, that cannot be allowed,” he said. “It is on record that so many people have been abusing the president, abusing the government and this is not the forum, the elections got over, we are here to support and witness what the youth are doing here.’’

He said people who have specialised in abusing the president at the national level would not be allowed in the district to avoid misleading the public as they have done in Kampala.
Mr Kyagulanyi was, however, able to access the venue attracting wild chants and celebrations from hundreds of people.
He said he was in Buhweju in good faith and did not want anybody to stop him since he likes talking to the youth.

Mr Kyagulanyi said the youth must take up the leadership roles of the country and stop thinking that they are still young since the population of Uganda is dominated by the youth.
“You are not too young to take the leadership of this country,’’ Mr Kyagulanyi said.
Mr Mwijukye disagreed with Mr Turyabagyenyi saying there is no law in Uganda that stops certain people from visiting specific places on orders of some individuals.

“There is no law that says people from Buhweju can sit and say so and so should not come here. What if the people in Kampala say Banyankore should not go to Kampala; where do we go? We must lead this country depending on the available laws,’’ Mr Mwijukye said.
Mr Mwijukye says Buhweju Unity Cup is meant to promote talent in the district and to inspire the youth to find their potential.
“And then someone says that if Bobi Wine comes here, we shall get a problem. How will it come? We need people who motivate our people,’’ Mr Mwijukye said.

He said Mr Mwine Mpaka, the Youth MP for Western Uganda recently invited MPs to Mbarara to launch Mbarara City without considering their political affiliations and was able to raise Shs80 million.
‘’I want you to respect what other people support. We are all Ugandans and we must stay together in peace,” Mr Mpaka, who was the chief guest in Buhweju said.
In a related development, police arrested one Sharon Kyogabirwe, a vocal activist, an opposition mobiliser and advocate for change of government, and detained her for several days.
She was reportedly picked by police in Kiruhura District in December 2017 and tortured for allegedly supporting People Power a pressure group associated with Bobi Wine.

"I was detained incommunicado for one week, beaten with batons, starved and I was told to surrender guns that I had imported to over throw the government and to reveal the sponsor of our “people power” political activities," she told journalists at hospital bed where she was found recovering.
She said she was dumped in a thicket near a soda factory and picked by good Samaritans who rushed her to the hospital.
She was admitted in a hospital in Mbarara and later transferred to Kampala for further treatment.
