The newly appointed Resident District Commissioner of Namayingo has ordered the interdiction of the head teacher of Buhemba Primary School for allegedly absenting herself during the opening of the new school term.

Mr Ian Kyeyune issued the order during a familiarisation tour of government programmes last week. It also followed the release of Senior Four exam results that showed that only four out of 1,850 students in the district had passed in Division 1.

He told the Daily Monitor that matters had been complicated by the fact that only one out of the nine teachers at the school had reported since the term began and that the lone teacher was conducting lessons in all the classes.

Mr Kyeyune also directed the district education officer to cooperate with local leaders and parents to identify and punish absentee teachers.
Some teachers, who talked to the Daily Monitor on condition that their identities be concealed, said most of them had resorted to operating boda bodas because they were underpaid by government.
