KAMPALA. The former Prime Minister and currently Leader of Opposition in the Republic of Kenya, Mr Raila Odinga, will be among the guests at the first ever Uganda Young Democrats alumni assembly that will be held on May 23, 2018 at Makerere Rugby playground.
While addressing the media during their last meeting in Kampala today, DP President Norbert Mao said that Mr Odinga is among the guests who have confirmed their attendance come next week.
“We assure the DP fraternity and the long suffering Ugandans that preparations for the grand reunion are now in full gear and there is no turning back,” Mr Mao said.
Last month, UYD Alumni held a meeting at Speke hotel in Kampala and unveiled a new strategy to ensure that all forces of change work together to create political change in the country.
During the meeting, Mr Mao said that they have embarked on fresh struggles to have change and fight unprecedented corruption, insecurity, increasing murders and impunity in the current regime.
Mr Mao also alleged that government agents have tried to threaten owners of several places not to host them in order to fail their struggle which aims at uniting the party.
Mr Mao added that many international guests from partner organizations in Kenya, South Africa Zimbabwe, Europe and America , have been invited and most of them have confirmed their attendance.
Other guests expected at the function include Mr Nelson Chamisa from Zimbabwe, Senator Hassan Omar from Kenya, Mr Fikile Mbalula from South Africa, Dr Paul Williams from United Kingdom and some ambassadors.
“In solidarity with democracy seeking forces in Uganda, we have also invited leaders of political and civil society organization as well as all democracy seeking partners in the country,” Mr Mao said.
He added that being a high profile function and considering the nature of guests invited, both locally and internationally, they hope Uganda police force now led by new IGP Martins Okoth-Ochola will continue to exhibit cooperation in order to uphold good image of Uganda.
However, Mr Samuel Lubega, the Chairman organising committee said that, the timing of this reawakening of the revolutionary zeal of Ugandans patriots comes at a time when President Museveni and his NRM government fatigue is well indicated by his failures to protect the lives of Ugandans.
“This is evidenced by the rampant kidnaps and murder of Ugandans by organised gangs, often times reportedly abetted by government security agencies,” Mr Lubega said.
