Rally ace Lwakataka charged with murder

RAKAI.

Rally driver Ponsiano Lwakataka has been charged with murder in a Magistrate’s Court in Rakai District.
Mr Lwakataka was charged in the same court about two weeks ago with assaulting a police officer, inciting violence and obstructing a police officer from doing his duties.
He was brought back to court on Friday expecting to be granted bail on the assault charge and walk out of prison. But upon reaching court, he found a murder charge awaiting him. The charge was read out to him before Grade One Magistrate Latif Nakibinge.
Mr Lwakataka was accused of killing nine people inside a house at Gwanda village, Kyebe Sub-county in Rakai District on January 13, 2013.
Mr Lwakataka was charged together with two others: Mr Asuman Muddu, a resident of Kasambya village near Kyotera Town and Mr Vincent Fegasi Kanyama, a Tanzanian.
Mr Lwakataka’s lawyer pleaded that their client was too sick to understand what was being read out to him and prayed that he be taken for medical treatment first.
The magistrate remanded Lwakataka back to prison. He will reappear in court on August 1.

The charges
Mr Lwakataka together with two others are accused of killing Andrew Ampiirwe, Pastor Steven Mugambe, Nowerina Nnaalinya, Maria Namatovu, Berna Nakivumbi, Jane Nakiwala, Christine Nassimbwa, Dan Ssemwanga and Maxensia Nakirijja.
