KASESE- President Museveni has ordered Kasese District authorities to immediately save the Mubuku Irrigation Scheme land that has been grabbed by some local people.

“…recover Mubuku Irrigation Scheme land. I hear it has been grabbed,” President Museveni ordered Kasese District chairman, Lt Col Dura Mawa Muhindo, on Thursday. Mr Museveni was touring the scheme that was recently rehabilitated at Shs19 billion.

The visibly irritated President told the district leaders that the scheme belongs to government and those using it are tenants, not owners.

Some individuals have claimed the land with the help of local land committees and civil servants who have endorsed freehold land titles.

Three different land titles have been acquired for 196 hectares that house the irrigation scheme’s water reservoir at Block B.

More than 300 people are claiming the land and are said to have paid a lot of money for processing the land titles for it.

In his response to the President’s queries, Lt Col Mawa admitted that mistakes had been made but implicated officials of the district land board.

“Your excellence, we are going to settle the matter since we have known the problem which was brought about by connivance within the district land board and area land committees,” Lt Col Mawa told the President.

The President commissioned government projects in the district which include Bwesumbu-Mbata road in Kyabarungira, Mubuku irrigation scheme, Kasese SS laboratory and Library block and laid a foundation stone on Kasese Municipal administration block.
