Recruitment of LDUs starts next week

The recruitment of Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel who will be deployed in Kampala and nearby towns will start on Tuesday next and end on October 1, 2018.

Ministry of Defence and Army spokesman, Brig Richard Karemire on Saturday announced that the LDUs will support police and other regular forces to reinforce security in Kampala metropolitan area that has experienced a spate of crime and murder of various people.

After the killing of former Buyende District Police Commander Muhammad Kirumira, President Yoweri Museveni directed the deployment of 24,000 strong force of LDU personnel and “crime preventers” in the 1,000 or so villages that make up Kampala and Wakiso districts to end the killings and provide security to citizens.

“H.E the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces directed a call up of reserves to support enforcement of law and order in Kampala Metropolitan Area. In fulfilment of this directive, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) announces that the recruitment of Local Defence Units (LDUs) personnel from the districts of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso will take place starting 25th September and end on 1st October 2018,” Brig Karemire said in the statement.

He said those interested must be between 18 and 35 years old and citizens of Uganda and holders of an original National Identify Card, healthy and mentally fit and ready to undergo medical and body check and a road run to test endurance and body fitness.

He said the recruits should have a minimum formal education of primary seven to senior four and preferably with no formal engagement or employment.

In addition, according to Brig Karemire, interested persons should have no criminal record and will be asked to present letters of recommendation from Local Council 1 chairperson, secretary for defence, Parish Internal Security officer, and Sub county Internal Security Officers
