KAMPALA. The DR Congo army yesterday clashed with unknown armed groups in the eastern DR Congo, forcing people to flee to Uganda.
The UPDF Second Division spokesperson Capt Arthur Timbaganya, yesterday said the clashes were near the Ugandan-DR Congo border. “There was fighting across the border. We don’t know which group was fighting the Congolese army” he said.
There were earlier reports that the fighting was between the Congolese army and the M23 rebels who had fled to Uganda.
But the army denied reports that 40 M23 rebels who had fled the battlefield and crossed to Uganda, were under the UPDF custody.
Sources say the fighters who fled were being driven in trucks by the UPDF to Kisoro District. When asked about the identity of the group, Capt Timbaganya said he had no information.
Last week at least 100 people died during clashes between the Congolese army and militias in Kamwina Nsapu in central DR Congo.
