Rukungiri, Ntungamo, Kabale best performers per subject

Kampala- Rukungiri, Ntungamo and Kabale districts registered the best performance in English language in the released results of Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) for 2017.

The worst performing districts in English language were Kitgum, Kween, Bukwo, Pader, Agago and Nwoya.

In Mathematics, Ntungamo Municipality recorded the best score with an average performance of aggregate 4.55 followed by municipalities of Masaka (4.61), Fort Portal (4.61), Rukungiri (4.71) and Bushenyi (4.82).

The worst performing districts in Mathematics were Kween, Bukwo, Kapchorwa, Kitgum and Tororo.
Over all, English and Mathematics, according to the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) executive secretary, Mr Dan Odongo, were the worst done subjects.

He indicated that some pupils could not solve problems that had practical application in the day-to-day life situations such as calculation involving a discount when one goes to a glossary to buy home items.

However, Mr Odongo indicated that the candidates were presenting their answers better and in a good handwriting.

In Social Studies and Religious Education, similarly the municipalities of Fort Portal, Ntungamo, Masaka and Bushenyi emerged best.

Worst performers in Social Studies were recorded in Kween District which registered an average aggregate score of 6.05, Bukwo District (5.90), Tororo Main (5.68), Kamuli Main (5.63), Luuka District (5.61) and Budaka District (5.56).

The five outstanding districts in Science were; Fort Portal Municipality (2.93), Masaka Municipality (3.27), Bushenyi Municipality (3.48), Ntungamo Municipality (3.65) and Mbarara Municipality (3.72).

The worst five performing districts in Science were; Kween (7.14), Tororo (6.80), Bukwo (6.79), Buvuma (6.75) and Kapchorwa (6.74).

According to Uneb, Social Studies and Science were generally the best done subjects countrywide. At least every district registered distinctions and credits in the two subjects. Fort Portal, Ntungamo, Masaka, Rukungiri and Bushenyi posted outstanding performance across the four subjects.

While reading the statement at the release of PLE results in Kampala on Friday, Mr Odongo listed the worst 10 performing districts, majority located in Eastern region.

The Minister of Education, Ms Janet Museveni, promised to tour Eastern region to establish the cause of poor performance.
