Grief engulfed the students and residents of Keyo Village in Lamogi Sub-County, Amuru district after a trigger happy security guard attached to the school shot dead a student of Keyo Senior Secondary School.
The student identified as Isaac Ojok, 18 in senior four was only left with one term to sit for the Uganda Certificate of Education in October. He was shot on Monday evening at around 8:00Pm at the school premises.
The security guard, attached to Exposs Security Company Limited , is alleged to have shot at Ojok as he was going for evening preps.
Witnesses, who spoke on conditions of anonymity, told Daily Monitor that earlier in the day the two had a misunderstanding.
“We are not so sure of what could have caused the shooting, but we suspect some misunderstanding between the two that resulted in to the shooting,”
The Aswa Regional Police Spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed the incident, adding that the police are still investigating the cause of the shooting.
Mr Okema, said there were two security guards at the school and they have all disappeared with their guns.
“We have mounted a hunt for the security guard. We will ensure that he is apprehended and brought to justice,” Mr Okema said.
Mr Okema, added that the students have also destroyed school properties amounting to millions of shillings, protesting the manner in which their colleague was killed.
“ We have deployed heavily at the school to stop the rioting students, so that the remaining school properties are not destroyed,” Mr Okema added.
Early this year, Mr Okema asked security agencies in the region to improve on the training of the guards, arguing that most of them were unprofessional and ill- trained.
In March this year, a trigger happy UPDF soldier shot dead two people and injured three in Opit Village in Lalogi Sub-County Gulu district.
