School head arrested after parent he fought with dies

Kole- What started as an exchange of words between a headmaster and a parent in Kole District last Tuesday has ended up in a loss of life.
A 30-year-old Anthony Odur died five days later after he was allegedly assaulted by Mr Jackson Ongom, the head teacher of Alyat Primary School in Aboke Sub-county.

The suspect currently under custody at Kole Central Police Station was arrested yesterday after he allegedly killed the parent for failing to contribute Shs5,000 for development fund.

Trouble started when Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in their recent meeting resolved that the parents of all 826 children enrolled at Alyat Primary School contribute Shs5,000 each for repairing a school borehole which had broken down.

Consequently, Mr Odur’s child was reportedly sent back home to bring the Shs5,000. This was after the father had already paid the said contribution.

Accountability
This, according to sources, prompted the victim to go to school and demand accountability for his contribution.

At this point, the head teacher turned violent and allegedly hit Odur on the head with a piece of metal before pushing him out of his office.
The parent sustained injuries on the head and some parts of his body and was rushed to Aboke health centre IV for treatment.

On Sunday, Odur died on the way to Gift Life Clinic in Lira, where he was referred for further management following his deteriorating condition.
Kole District police commander Ahmed Musakana yesterday confirmed the incident saying the case is under investigation.

Cause of death
Ms Dorcus Adong, the deceased’s wife, believes the injuries inflicted on her husband are what caused his death.
She said soon after the attack on Tuesday, her husband started vomiting blood.

By press time, the victim’s body had been taken for postmortem.
The LC3 chairman of Aboke Sub-county, Mr Bonny Macmoko Odyek, regretted the incident.

“I want to hold an emergency meeting with all the school administrators, so that the same thing does not happen in future,” he said.

The North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Mr David Ongom Mudong, said he was aware of the incident but was yet to furnish himself with details before making any official comment.

“I am also hearing from other sources but not yet confirmed with our officers in Kole,” the police spokesperson said.
The deceased left behind one wife and six children.
