School authorities in Luweero District have appealed to the government over the policy of not allowing burglar-proof doors in school laboratories, citing safety of the science equipment.

According to Mr Erusmas Kabogoza, the director Mitala Technical Works, the firm constructing the science block under the Universal Secondary Education programme, the school authorities are blaming them for not fixing burglar-proof doors to safeguard expensive science equipment.
Guidelines by the Ministry of Education restrict using burglar-proof doors for both the classrooms and science blocks for students’ safety.

“We hope government will look into this issue for the safety of the expensive science equipment that has been allocated to the benefiting schools. Most of the benefiting schools have no clear boundaries and lack perimeter walls to safe guard such expensive equipment,” Mr Kabogoza said.

Ms Jane Afra Musinguzi, the headmistress of Target Community College, said burglar-proof doors for the science blocks and libraries would help safe guard the expensive equipment and books which government has already delivered to the school.
