Angered by the increasing cases of defilement and rape, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura, has said schools should teach Karate and Taekwondo at an early stage.

The drastic proposal, the IGP said, would initiate pupils in self-defense drills that would help in addressing this rampant problem.

Speaking at an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stella Maris Girls Primary School in Nkokonjeru, Buikwe District at the weekend, Gen Kayihura said such training would equip the girl-child with self-defense skills in case they are confronted by defilers or rapists.

“You should introduce these trainings in schools because women are the victims of crime and men are the criminals,” Gen Kayihura said.

He pledged to send police officers to train girls on how to fight back in-case they are provoked by criminals.
“I am going to start with this school within two weeks and I am going to send my men to train these girls free of charge, to empower the girl-child,” he said.

Gen Kayihura also advised schools to embrace the sports trainings for a better future. President Museveni has directed that sports men and sports women should first be considered when recruiting people in police, and the army because they are fit and can participate at international level,” the IGP said.

Gen Kayihura expressed the need for schools to build partnerships to identify talent so as to compete on the international scene.

The school’s headteacher, Ms Florence Nalumu, called on parents to educate the girls for a bright future.
