Science, English teachers should spend more years in training, school heads say

Head teachers from both government and private secondary schools in Tororo District have asked the ministry of Education to set up minimum standards for the admission of science and mathematics teachers to training colleges.
The recommendation was made by teachers during a dissemination of the 2013 National Assessment of Progress in Education report by the Uganda National Examination Board in Tororo on Wednesday.
The recommendation observes that some science, English and mathematics teachers are instead misguiding pupils and students due to the inadequate training they might have undergone while in college.
Abubakar Kalungi, the Rubongi Army Secondary School head teacher, said government should set lengthy training periods for such teachers to fully guide students to be relevant citizens.
Teachers spend two years in training colleges to attain certificates or diploma in teaching for either primary or secondary education.
According to the report, performance in science subjects, including biology, mathematics and English have since 2008 been falling.
