Man jumps off police building in attempt to elude criminal charges

A 27-year-old man on Thursday survived death after jumping from the balcony of the third floor of the building on which Seeta Police Station is located.
According to police, Bernard Omara jumped from the building’s balcony as he was being led into police cells in an attempt to committing suicide in order to avoid being taken to court over charges of theft.

Omara, a resident of Kasenyi village in Goma Division Mukono District sustained several injuries including broken bones and was immediately rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for medical attention.
It is alleged that he was arrested by residents who caught him red-handed stealing cassava from Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP), Mr Fred Yiga’s garden located in Seeta.

The Officer in Charge of Seeta Police Station, Mr Joshua Kananura said Omara will be charged with several crimes including trying to commit suicide.

“Omara is being taken to Mulago for treatment but he will be charge of trying to commit suicide including the theft case,” Kananura said.
According to residents, Omara had made it a habit to steal food from people’s gardens but managed to elude arrest.
This is the fourth person to attempted committing suicide by jumping off multi story buildings in just two months.

One of those suicide survivors was found to be suffering mental illness and he had been undergoing treatment at Butabika hospital.
