Arua District leaders have condemned the corruption in the Office of the Prime Minister which has led to loss of billions of shillings meant for the Peace, Recovery and Development Plan programme.

Speaking during the farewell ceremony for the outgoing Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Luke Orombi, in Arua on Monday, the LC5 chairperson, Mr Sam Nyakua, said: “People are dying in hospitals without drugs, our roads are all dilapidated and we have poor schools yet civil servants are swindling money with impunity. This is unacceptable.”

Mr Nyakua called upon donor countries to start dealing directly with the districts other than channelling money through the Office of the Prime Minister.

The Arua Resident District Commissioner, Mr Ibrahim Abiriga, said civil servants accused of corruption should be tried by the court martial and those found guilty sentenced to death.

Bishop Orombi attributed the rampant cases of corruption in the country to greed and lack of love for God. Bishop Orombi said a thief has no peace in his heart.

“Let us take them to court and after that take them to Jesus because prisons cannot remove the thieving habit in them,” Bishop Orombi said.

The State Minister for Internal Affairs, Mr James Baba, apologised over the corruption scandal. “We (government) are very sorry that monies have been lost,” he said.
