Serukka’s term as KCCA health director expires

KAMPALA. Dr David Serukka’s three-year contract as Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) director of public health and environment has expired, the institution’s Acting executive director, Mr Samuel Serunkuuma announced on Wednesday.

Mr Serunkuuma made a revelation while reading a statement about the status of the city during council meeting that was convened by Kampala Lord Mayor, Mr Erias Lukwago.

“Your worship the Lord Mayor and the honorable councillors, I would like to inform you that there has been new changes in management. Dr Serukka’s contract as director public health and environment has expired,” he said.

He further revealed that Dr Daniel Okello, who has been the deputy director of public health and environment, is now the acting director, pending appointment of a new director to steer the health directorate.

However, he didn’t explain whether Dr Serukka’s contract would be renewed or not.
Dr Serukka confirmed to Daily Monitor that his contract had expired. But he said that there was room for renewal. He joined KCCA in 2014.

“Right now I can’t give a comment on behalf of KCCA because my contract has expired,” he said when we asked him about the status of drugs in city health centres.

Dr Serukka, hitherto being appointed KCCA director of public health and environment, was the executive director of Protecting Families Against HIV/Aids (PREFA).

He holds a Bachelors degree of Medicine and Surgery and a Masters degree of public health from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom.

The Public Health and Environment Directorate (PH&ED) has the mandate to facilitate and provide support to ensuring health and productivity citizens; and a clean, habitable and sustainable community for the city.

The directorate guides the Authority on the efficient management of public health and the environment.
The KCCA executive director, the deputy executive director and all the directors are appointed by the President on recommendation of public service, and they serve a three-term which is renewable.
