Sheikh Jjemba attackers were assassins - Police

KAMPALA. A police officer has narrated to court that there was exchange of fire at the home of Dr Haruna Jjemba, one of the sheikhs who narrowly survived assassination in the syndicated killings of various Muslim leaders two years ago.

Detective Cpl Moses Lule, 33, said he made that finding upon examining the scene of the shooting as a Scenes of Crime Officer (SOCO) at Dr Jjemba’s home.
“…on January 3, 2015, I was attached to Kasangati Police Station when the OC CID, Mr Charles Kusingura called me to his office and informed me that armed robbers had attacked Dr Jjemba in Watuba Sub-county in Wakiso District,” Cpl Lule testified.

Cpl Lule explained that upon reaching the area, he found the scene had already been secured by police officers. He said he started surveying the crime scene as a SOCO with the view of recovering exhibits.
He said he realised that some bullets had penetrated the wall of Dr Jjemba’s house.

He informed court that he recovered four cartridges on the road leading to Dr Jjemba’s home, more five cartridges and a projectile in his compound and a Sub Machine Gun loaded with 22 rounds of ammunition from the police officer who was guarding the home.

He said he compiled a report and handed over all the exhibits to OC CID Mr Kusingura on January 5, 2015.
Mr Kusingura, the 18th prosecution witness, confirmed before court that he contacted Cpl Lule and assigned him to visit the scene of crime.

The two police officers appeared in court to testify against the 14 men, including the leader of Tabliq Sect Sheikh Yunus Kamoga who are accused of masterminding the wave of killings of top Muslim clerics between 2012 and 2015.
