The ex-wife of former NFA executive director, Mr Damian Akankwasa, was yesterday convicted by City Hall Court, pending sentence.

Juliet Katusiime, who appeared in court smiling, was found guilty of stealing more than Shs900 million from their matrimonial home in Naguru, a city suburb, three years ago.
Katusiime was convicted together with a businessman, David Ssebuliba, of Nansana, a city suburb, and Maj. Godfrey Kyomuhendo of the Ministry of Defence, who were found guilty of keeping the stolen money.

Court also found Katusiime guilty of forging and uttering false documents in the name of Annet Basemera, with intent to defraud.

Trial Magistrate Juliet Hatanga noted that indeed Katusiime was seen by one of the State witnesses carrying the two bags containing the said money and one was found at her residence in Nansana.

“Mr Akankwasa told court that he used to earn a salary of Shs11 million plus sitting allowances, while his brother was dealing in land, which was evidence to show that the money was there,” the magistrate said, adding that the convict knew about the money and preparations of buying land but she decided to take it.

Ms Hatanga also said it was ridiculous for the convict to open several bank accounts using her sister’s name yet using her photo (Katusiime) and four more people including an account of a deceased person.

Prosecution led by Mr Robert Mackay asked court to release the Shs360 million attached under the names of Annet Basemera as compensation to the complainants.
Ms Hatanga adjourned the case to tomorrow for sentence.
