Shun homosexuality, Mukula tells youth

In Summary

The Chairman of Nubian Forum, Mr Wahib Doka, called upon the Nubian community to jealously protect their culture.

Uganda’s Penal Code criminalises homosexuality.

The youth should shun homosexuality and follow African cultural values, the Soroti Municipality Member of Parliament, Mr Mike Mukula, has said.

“Without our own culture, we are nothing. So you have a duty to protect your culture against foreign invasion,” Mr Mukula said during a fundraising ceremony for the East African Nubian cultural gala in Kampala recently.
The ruling NRM party MP donated Shs1 million towards the event and promised to be part of the fundraising team.

The Chairman of Nubian Forum, Mr Wahib Doka, called upon the Nubian community to jealously protect their culture.

Uganda’s Penal Code criminalises homosexuality.

A Bill tabled by MP David Bahati, proposes longer jail terms for homosexual acts, including a life sentence in certain circumstances.

Foreign donors have threatened to cut aid if gay rights are not respected.
In October the Speaker of Parliament, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, was involved in a row with Canada’s Foreign Minister John Baird over gay rights at a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Quebec, Canada.

The Nubian cultural gala, which is also known as Chai, will be hosted in Kampala early next year.
