The just concluded Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) recruitment exercise attracted very few specialists from the western region districts, officials have said.
UPDF targeted to enlist 492 O-level certificate holders and 105 specialists who are medically sound and aged between 18 -25 years from 21 districts of Ankole, Kigezi and Tooro sub regions but less than half of the targeted number in the latter category was realised.
A person to join through the specialist category was required to have passed with two principle passes in science subjects at Senior Six, a university graduate or diploma holder in medicine or engineering disciplines. “We managed to get only 33 specialists,” Capt Ronald Kakurungu, the Second Division spokesperson said on Monday, adding that they fell short by 72.
However, the number of applicants with O-level qualification was overwhelming. “We did not have any deficit in any district for ordinary recruits. We had overwhelming numbers turning up. We would subject the applicants to both oral and written tests to get the best,” Capt Kakurungu said.
