Tororo- Vice President Edward Ssekandi has commended Busitema University for embracing academic programmes aligned to the National Development Plan that promotes a hands-on-approach.
Mr Ssekandi, who was opening the university’s first development partners’ and stakeholders’ conference at the Tororo campus last week, said the institution has many opportunities which can contribute to the social transformation of the country.
“Uganda has many opportunities, which if exploited, can immensely contribute to rapid transformation of peasant practices from backwardness to modernity. That is why we want universities to take on displines that meet the immediate needs of our country rather than concentrating on theories,” he said.
Mr Ssekandi advised the university to peg its programmes to the present and future needs of Ugandans and undertake science programmes to address technological gaps.
The Vice President urged agricultural scientists to empower Ugandans to shift from subsistence to modern market-oriented production.
He appealed to development partners and stakeholders to support Busitema University to build a strong foundation as an institution of science and technology, saying its programmes will not only benefit Ugandans, but the region and rest of the world.
The Chancellor of Busitema University, Prof Francis Omaswa, expressed gratitude to the government and other partners for supporting the institution, but also asked them for additional collaborations and funding.
