State House nets Kisoro district officials over immunisation cash

KISORO—Kisoro district finance officer Mr Richard Semukyo and the district cashier Mr Charles Nsengiyunva have been arrested over missing immunisation cash.

The duo failed to account for Shs9.9m that was meant for facilitating the polio and measles immunisation exercises early this year.

The Head of Medicines and Health Service Delivery Monitoring Unit State House Dr Diana Atwiine said that the suspects were arrested on Thursday and handed over to police in Kisoro district for thorough investigations and possible prosecution.

“As monitored the donor money meant for polio and measles immunisation, we established that the Kisoro District finance officer Mr Richard Semukyo and the district cashier Mr Charles Nsengiyunva failed to account for Shs9.9m which we believed that was diverted to either their personal use or other things. They were arrested and taken to Kisoro police station so that they can be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted thereafter,” Dr Atwiine said.
She said that the monitoring exercise is being conducted country wide and any other culprits found shall be arrested and prosecuted without favour because if such misconduct is not checked, the government risks losing international funding.

The Kisoro District police commander Mr Edger Akankwasa confirmed the arrest of the two suspects adding that police were handling the cases.
The district secretary for health Mr Izidol Tumusiime said they would not tolerate corrupt officers in the area.
“Any one sabotaging government programmes through corruption must be arrested and charged accordingly regardless of their status,” Mr Tumusiime said.
