In Summary
Ms Linda Nabusayi, the deputy presidential press secretary, telephoned the Daily Monitor yesterday and said State House had already spent Shs20 million on Mr Yoweri Bukanu.
State House has said there is “nothing more” it can do for an NRM activist who was allegedly beaten up by FDC activists for pinning up President Museveni’s posters.
Ms Linda Nabusayi, the deputy presidential press secretary, telephoned the Daily Monitor yesterday and said State House had already spent Shs20 million on Mr Yoweri Bukanu.
“We have been treating him. We are the ones who even referred him to Ultima Trauma and Orthopaedic in Kampala. There is nothing more we can do about his condition,” she said.
Mr Bukanu needs to undergo surgery on his spinal cord to enable him walk without the aid of calliper-splints and crutches.
The Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, where he was referred to for treatment, needs KSh800,000 (Shs24 million).
Mr Bukanu said he is a young man who needs to regain control of his limbs to fend for himself lest he becomes a “permanent dependant”.
He added that his poor relatives now taunt him, saying the Movement should take care of him.
Earlier, Mr Tamale Murundi, the presidential press secretary, had said Mr Bukanu should have appealed to the NRM Election Team and the police.
Mr Bukanu said he reported the case to the police in Masindi, who gave him medical forms that he used to seek treatment.
At the time he was attacked, Mr Bukanu was staying with his elder brother in Masindi.
He added that while there, he heard a radio announcement on one of the local radio stations asking Movement youth to turn up for assignment, to pin-up the president’s posters.
It was while putting up the posters that people he alleges were FDC supporters, beat him up.
FDC denies the accusation.
Speaker Rebecca Kadaga on November 13 last year, wrote to President Museveni requesting him to facilitate Mr Bukanu’s treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi.
