Stop wasting time on burials, says Museveni

President Museveni has said Ugandans devote a lot of time to burials at the expense of work.

Speaking to business executives and investors at the Uganda Responsible Investors (URI) awards ceremony in Kampala on Friday, the President said majority of Ugandans are still stuck in the pre-industrial traditions of going to bury everyone and anytime. He said this is incompatible with the philosophy of hard work.

“It is still a huge problem but those are the small aspects I call software problems that need to be fine-tuned through lectures and sensitisation,” Mr Museveni said.

He said Ugandans should borrow lessons from other countries where burials are held on weekends.
Mr Museveni, who was named the Most Inspiring, Admired and Patriotic Political Investor since independence in 1962, said he is more preoccupied with key issues such as security, infrastructure development and education.

“What is more crucial in modern society is security for both people and property which leads to prosperity, infrastructure such as roads, electricity; which lowers the cost of doing business. But most significant of all, the population must be entrepreneurial,” he said.
The President also outlined government’s plans of an electric railway system and increase on hydro-power generation to lower the rates of electricity tariffs to about 4-5 cents per unit which will trigger more industrialisation and employment.
At the ceremony was Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi who received Best Government Personality of the Year award.

Mr Mbabazi reiterated government support to the private sector through adoption of business friendly policies.

The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces took home the biggest prize; the Overall Responsible Investment Award, which was received by the President.
Gen Salim Saleh was awarded the Most Admired and Development Oriented NRA/NRM Bush War Hero award. The Ministry of Defence received the Most Admired Government Ministry award, and Gen Aronda Nyakairima was named the Best Army Commander of the UPDF since 1962.

Other winners at the awards organised by the Opinion Poll Group, included Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Best State Enterprise award), Marie Stopes (Best Reproductive Healthcare provider) and Megha Industries (Best Mattress Manufacturers). Standard Chartered Bank received Best Corporate Bank award, while Bank of Uganda got the Best Statutory Authority award.
