Students at Makerere University, Kampala, are striking in protest of a directive by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu that all students pay 60 per cent of tuition by March 8th.

Police have deployed heavily at the university, to calm the situation.

The striking students say the directive is unfair since most students will not have raised tuition by the deadline. They are demanding the university administration to scrap the directive.

Makerere opened for the second semester on 26 January.
