Student dances to death at marriage ceremony

Serere. A marriage ceremony that had started with pomp and merrymaking last weekend in Kelim village, Serere District, ended in sorrow after a Senior Three student, who is said to have gatecrashed the occasion, dropped dead.
Sam Ejanyu, 22, a student at Kyere SS, brought the function at Mr Charles Ekaju’s home to a standstill after he died instantly while trying an acrobatic feat. He reportedly landed his head on the floor and broke his spinal code. The East Kyoga region police spokesperson, Mr Michael Odongo, said though police had preferred a postmortem, the deceased’s parents and relatives saw no need for it because the circumstances under which the boy died were clear.
An eyewitness, Mr Michael Okiria, said the incident happened as the function climaxed when in-laws from both sides were drinking local brew.
“The boys were quite many in the group dancing; it’s here that the deceased died after landing down. Everything that was going on was cut short as we had to call the LC1 and police,” Mr Okiria said.
The village chairperson, Mr Lawrence Ebogu, said the function was halted after the incident. “Holiday makers have always been a problem at such functions, they always gatecrash them,” he said.

“We were shocked that on this fateful day, he died in an attempt to showcase his skills to fellow youth at the marriage function,” Mr Okello said.
