Police in Kween District have dispatched a team of detectives to track down a woman who allegedly circumcised 20 girls.

The woman, whose names were not disclosed for fear of interfering with investigations, is said to be on the run for two weeks now after she performed the procedure on the girls aged between seven and 16 years in Kesosuno Village, Binyiny Sub-county, Kween District.

The district police commander, Mr Bashir Ssempala, said the woman is among the most notorious female surgeons in the area.

He said she took off with the girls and their parents after they were tipped off.

“When we reached the place where the girls were cut, we only found a pool of blood with some clothes but nobody was there. The community was able to inform us about the number of girls who were cut and the name of the surgeon,” Mr Ssempala said.

He said the suspect is believed to have taken refuge in one of the neighbouring forests in Kween.

The Resident District Commissioner, Mr Joseph Okwakol, said his office was organising a campaign to teach people on the dangers of female genital mutilation.

The practice was outlawed through an Act of Parliament in 2010.
