HOIMA.

Susan Magara who was murdered by unidentified assailants in Kampala after being held for 20 days, was laid to rest at her ancestral home in Kitoba Sub County in Hoima District on Thursday.

Gen Henry Tumukunde, the security minister who represented President Museveni at the burial apologised to the mourners for the government’s failure to rescue Magara who was kidnapped in Kampala on February 7th.

“We plead guilty in this particular case because security could have saved the life of Susan,” he said.

He said the family of Magara agreed with security agencies to work closely in the investigations but at some point the family asked security to withdraw for fear that the kidnappers may kill her.

Tumukunde also said the security agencies collaborated in intelligence gathering, tracking suspects and sharing clues but they were unable to apprehend the suspects.

“The death of Susan will signal fundamental changes in Uganda, watch the space,” Tumukunde said.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba who was representing the Inspector General of Police was booed by mourners when he said he is doing whatever is possible to apprehend the suspects.

“We have made some progress. We are tracing the suspects. We had good, good information from the toll free telephones which we gave the public,” he said amidst boos from the mourners.

The Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom prime minister Mr Andrew Byakutaga asked the government to end the rampant murders and kidnaps in the country.

"There are many unanswered questions around this death. Many women have been killed. What has been done to stop that?” Byakutaga wondered.

He asked the government to put more effort in streamlining the security sector and urged people to work with the government in promoting peace and stability in the country.
