Suspected ADF rebels arrested

By Misairi Thembo Kahungu

Kasese- Security operatives in Kasese are holding six men suspected to be Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.

The army spokesperson for Rwenzori Region, Lt Ninsiima Rwemijuma, said the suspects were captured by the Congolese army inside DR Congo territory and later handed over to Uganda at Mpondwe border.
However, he declined to confirm the number of the suspects although a military source who participated in receiving them said they were six.

“I can confirm that we have here in Kasese suspected ADF rebels. Our counterparts in DRC captured them and handed them to us. About their number, I can’t tell you now,” Lt Rwemijuma said.
He declined to reveal where they were being detained.

Lt Rwemijuma said the suspects are believed to be part of the ADF remnants still marauding in the eastern DRC jungles planning to attack Uganda.
However, he said, the borders are secure and UPDF maintains monitoring of the ADF rebels across the border.

The ADF rebels were defeated in 2003 after terrorising most parts of the Rwenzori region since November 1996 when they first attacked Uganda from DR Congo.

Three charged with treason
Meanwhile, three men have been charged with treason in the High Court in Kasese following claims that they allegedly supply food and other materials to ADF rebels.

According to the charge sheet, the suspects identified as Mr Samuel Mumbere, Mr Jamali Baluku and Mr Gideon Masereka committed the alleged offence at Kisololo village in Karambi Sub-county in Kasese District between December 2012 and March 2013.

The hearing of their case will start on July 29 at the Kasese Magistrate’s Court.
