Police in Jinja are holding 27 people suspected to be part of a gang that has been terrorising residents in the area.

The suspects, majority of whom are street children, are said to be behind the raping of women, breaking into people’s houses and attacking of pedestrians on streets with knives.
The district police commander, Mr Jonathan Musinguzi, on Monday said the suspects were picked from Oboja, Alidina streets and Main Street during the night.

He said the operation was launched on Sunday evening following a resolution by the district security committee to have all the street children and other idlers forcefully removed from streets in an effort to rid the town of wrong doers.

‘’We began this operation on Sunday and we are continuing until we see that those bad elements terrorising people are out of the town,’’ Mr Musinguzi said.

He said the suspects, who are kept at Jinja Central Police Station, would be produced in court to answer charges of vagabond and other related cases once investigations are complete.
Of recent, murders, especially of boda boda cyclists, have been common.
