Suspects on the run after burning baby to death

Police in Mbale District are hunting for suspects in the killing of a two-month-old baby boy in Bugunalire Lower village, Mutoto Sub County.
The Mbale District Police Commander, Mr Mathias Turyasingura told Daily Monitor on Wednesday that Elijah Wambutu, son to Mr Bernard Wakayinza, was burnt after their hut was set on fire by unknown people at about 5pm on Tuesday.
“We have started investigations into the matter to establish what exactly happened. We are applying all the possible ways to have the suspects arrested,” Mr Turyasingura said.

Mr Turyasingura said police have already gathered some vital information, which will help in their investigations.
He, however, said the scene of crime had been tampered with. Following the fire, one Ms Jamawa Irike, a neighbour, who was suspected to have torched the hut was manhandled by some people who hjad gathered at the scene.
“She is currently admitted to one of the clinics in town, in a critical condition after sustaining severe beatings from angry residents,” he said.

Daily Monitor has learnt that homicide team with Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) visited the scene and later took the body to Mbale Municipal mortuary pending post mortem.
Mr Robert Mujansi, a Defence secretary in the area, revealed that one of the suspects, who are on run, has been having misunderstandings with the mother of the deceased, Babra Mutonyi over a man.

“There is information that one of the suspects, who has been having misunderstandings over the man but it’s not yet confirmed,” he said.
One of the residents, who preferred anonymity, said the suspect in question first assaulted the mother of the deceased before setting the hut on fire.
The residents, however, called upon police to investigate the matter, arrest suspect and charge them accordingly.
