Suspended DPC charged with assault of journalist, released on bail

A police officer who was recently captured on camera assaulting journalists has been released on bail after being charged before Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court.
Mr Joram Mwesigye, the DPC Old Kampala Police Station was on Thursday charged with three counts including, assault and occasioning bodily harm to a local journalist, Mr Andrew Lwanga, who is currently hospitalized at Nsambya hospital. He was also charged with damaging property, including two cameras; one belonging to Mr Lwanga and the other to a one, Joseph Setimba, another local TV journalist.
Mr Mwesigye was released by the presiding Grade one Magistrate, Sanyu Mukasa on a cash bail of Shs800,000 after presenting five sureties who were each bonded Shs2million, not cash.
The matter was adjourned to Friday for hearing.
