Talk to children about HIV/Aids, says Kabaka

Threat. Uganda’s HIV prevalence rate currently stands at 7.3 per cent with the epidemic being high among married people.

Luweero- Kabaka Ronald Mutebi has said children should be involved in HIV/Aids campaigns through “straight-talks” in order to save the young generation from being wiped out by the epidemic.

“The HIV/Aids is no longer a secret but a topic which should be freely discussed with our children,” he said.
He said a number of children who were born with HIV have now grown and are in school because of sensitisation that encourages positive living.

“Our children should have the opportunity to get involved in the campaign against HIV/Aids. Cultural competitions which highlight the dangers of the scourge should be encouraged among our children,” the Kabaka added.

He was speaking at a ceremony to crown the school which won the Buganda Royal Arts Shield competition at Janan Secondary School in Luweero on Saturday.

Uganda has made tremendous improvements in the fight against HIV; however, recent data indicates the country has slide back with prevalence rates rising to 7.3 per cent.
Prevalence rates, according to data, is fast spreading among married people but is also high among sex workers, boda boda riders and fishing communities, among others.
