Mbale- A teacher who recently hit a nine-year-old pupil with a stick in the eye, has been arrested by police in Mbale District.
The teacher had allegedly been on the run. Mt Elgon Regional Police spokesperson Diana Nandawula confirmed the arrest.
“We want to get a statement from him about the incident,” she said, adding that although the parents seem to have lost interest in the case, the law has to take its course.
Sobra Namugga, a Primary Four pupil at Nabuyonga Primary School, left hospital recently after her eye was removed by Dr Robert Mayeku, an eye specialist at Benedictine Eye Clinic in Tororo District.
Namugga had been summoned, together with other pupils, by the teacher to explain why they were shouting in class.
“Our main target is to find out whether there was any criminality. But all I know is that the teacher was caning a different student and then the stick broke and hit this girl’s eye,” said Ms Nandawula.
However, Ms Barbra Namugga, the pupil’s mother, said although her child is going to live without an eye, it was an accident that could have happened to anybody.
Meanwhile, a teacher of St Katherine Girls School in Lira is being held at Lira Central Police Station on allegations of assaulting a student into unconsciousness last Thursday.
Robinah Ewao, 14, a Senior Two student was taken to Lira hospital unconscious after she was slapped on the right eye.
Ewao regained consciousness after seven hours.
