Tear gas rocks Mbarara as police battle with FDC’s Ingrid, Amuriat

MBARARA: Business paralysed in Mbarara town as police battled with Forum for Democratic Change’s secretary for mobilization Ingrid Turinawe and the party presidential candidate Amuriat Patrick Oboi who led a procession against lifting of the presidential age limit.
Ms Turinawe and Amuriat emerged at about 11:30am at Buremba road with placards written on ‘’Uganda belongs to all of us’’, ‘’102 (b) the only hope for us” through their open roof car windows as they drove along Mbarara high street.
When they reached at Ahamahembe ge’ente round about near Balya hardware which was heavily deployed with field force police, they made six rounds drive at the roundabout as they raised their placards towards the police officers as people cheered before driving towards Markansingh Street.
Three police vans surrounded Ms Ingrid’s car and ordered her to get out which she declined before they asked her driver to open the windows since she had refused to get out.
After ten minutes the crowd started pelting stones at police which prompted them to fire teargas to disperse them. However, the situation worsened when the Rwizi region police commander Robert Walugembe called a break down to tow Ms Turinawe’s car.
She was later allowed to drive back to Kampala as two police vans trailed her.
