Tension rises as families face eviction from land

Tension is rising among residents of Kikongolo village, Kalungu District as more than 20 families are threatened with eviction from the land on which they have lived for decades.
One of the people who face eviction, Mr Ereneo Muyimba, said since December last year, the residents and a local church have received eviction notices from the police and the LC 1 chairperson, but it is not clear who are behind the notices.
The notices, one of which the Daily Monitor has seen, carry a signature and stamps and they make no specifications about the acreage of the land which is estimated to be 60 acres.
Mr Muyimba said whenever the concerned residents organise a meeting to discuss the matter, some unknown people distribute money in local drinking joints and the people get too drunk for meaningful discussions.
Another resident, Mr Everest Kabogoza, said attempts by the affected families to reach out to the district leadership for help have been frustrated by lack of interest in the problem. He added that no action is taken whenever they have raised the matter.
The area Member of Parliament, Mr Joseph Ssewungu, met the families last Sunday and promised to follow up the issue with the Ministry of Lands and the Resident District Commissioner.
