Soroti- Karamoja and Teso sub-regions have decided to revive traditional granaries to ensure food security and stop relying on the World Food Programme.

“Granaries are the only sure measure of resilience to future disruption or unavailability of critical food supply. We must all think critically about reviving this for the good of our societies,” Mr Bernard Eyalu, the chairperson of Lalle Parish in Kamuda Sub-county, Soroti District, said on Tuesday.

The Uganda National Bureau of Statistics in 2010 estimated that nearly nine out of 10 households in Karamoja faced food insecurity.

The Kotido LC5 chairperson, Mr Peter Lokwii, said although some homes have granaries, sometimes there is nothing to keep there because of drought, pests and unpredictable climatic changes.

“We have taught people about this but then shortly drought hits, the harvests are poor and are only meant for eating so the people eventually have nothing to keep,” Mr Lokwii said.

The Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development t through the German Red Cross is spearheading the sensitisation and provision of materials to revive the granaries.
