Sergeant Dragon, the Police sniffer dog supposed to serve Teso region is unwell.
The Police spokesperson East Kyoga region, Juma Hassan Nyene, says Sgt Dragon, who is based in Soroti, had to be withdrawn from duty so he could rest.
Mr Nyene denies that the dog is sick, but simply overworked.
The dog serves the districts of Soroti, Serere, Ngora, Kumi, Katakwi, Kaberamaido, Bukedea and Amuria.
Mr Nyene says Police receives between eight to twelve cases every week from the different Teso districts that require the services of the sniffer dog.
That large number of cases has worn down the dog, according to Mr Nyene.
Meanwhile, need for the dog's service continues unabated.
On Sunday, thieves broke into Princess Diana Memorial Health Centre IV in Madera ward, Northern Division, Soroti Municipality and stole items worth 18 million shillings.
Geoffrey Akol Oumo, the L.C.4 councilor representing Madera ward, says they rushed to police to help with them with Sgt. Dragon only to discover he was not on duty.
Mr Ouma says they were informed that the dog is sick and cannot work.
According to Mr Nyene, police in Soroti has received quite a number of similar cases since the dog became indisposed.
