Thirteen feared dead in Mubende road accident

Thirteen people are feared dead in an accident that occurred last night on the Kampala-Mubende Road, about 100 kilometres from Kampala. The 13 were travelling in a commuter taxi Reg. No. UAQ 201H.

The taxi, according to witnesses was travelling from Kampala to Kyenjojo District, when it had a head on collision with a truck Reg. No. UAQ 624H.

The accident occurred at Kattabalanga, on the Mubende-Mityana Road, five kilometres from Mubende town.

The driver of the truck identified as Fred Bukenya fled the scene and his whereabouts are unknown.

Only one person out of the 14 who were in the taxi survived. The survivor, Ms Jamaica Ayebale is admitted at Mubende Hospital.

The Officer in Charge Mubende Police Station Mr Milton Bwambale said the place where the accident occured is a black spot.

He four accidents have occurred at the spot in the last three months.

It is hardly a week since nine people died in an accident on the Jinja- Kayunga Road. Uganda has one of the highest numbers of road accident deaths in the world. Three thousand people are killed in accidents annually, which is 30 to 40 times higher than European countries like Britain or Germany.
