Three people injured in Mpigi fuel tanker explosion

  • The injured were identified as; Mr Muhammad Muga, 55, who was driving fuso truck, his turn man Mr Bashir Kasujja and unidentified fuel tanker driver.

Police in Mpigi District have confirmed that three people were critically injured in a fire accident that happened at Kavule-Katende along Kampala-Masaka highway last night.

The terrible accident occurred near St. Joseph of Nazareth High School when a Fuso truck, registration number UAY 373W, carrying charcoal and matooke, reportedly collided head-on with a fuel tanker registration number UAX 761V, resulting into explosion.

According to Mr Joseph Musana, the police publicist in Katonga Region, after the two vehicles collided, the Fuso truck overturned and the fuel tanker caught fire on spot which paralysed traffic flow on the highway for almost six hours untill Thursday morning.

"We have cleared the road because our team together with the public have done everything possible to put off the fire and now vehicles are moving on smoothly,” Mr Musana said.

“We're only waiting for a crane from Kampala to remove the wreckage to Mpigi Central Police Station," he said.

"The accident happened at around 10PM on Wednesday night and it was terrible because the victims are on life supporting machines at Rubaga Hospital. They need our prayers," Mr. Musana added.

The injured were identified as; Mr Muhammad Muga, 55, who was driving Fuso truck, his turn man Mr Bashir Kasujja and unidentified fuel tanker driver.

Police cautioned the public: "While you may be curious always remember fuel tanks carry flammable fluids & are likely to explode when in contact with fire, we therefore request you to stay away from the accident scene."
