Toroma by-election: FDC campaign manager, underage girl arrested

What you need to know:

  • Earlier, the Electoral Commission arrested a 16-year-old girl allegedly trying to vote for a one Okello George at Agule polling station. Mr Nathan Gwaya, EC staff and supervisor handed the girl over to police for further investigation.
  • Eight candidates were nominated by EC to contest in the election after the seat fell vacant following the death of Cyrus Amodoi Imalingat in a motor accident.

Mr Tom Wabwire, the campaign manager for Mr Martin Omedo Odaka, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate in the ongoing Toroma county by-election in Katakwi District has been arrested.
Mr Wabwire was arrested by police in Okokorio parish in Kapujan Sub-county this afternoon. He is currently being detained at Katakwi Central Police Station.
The regional Police spokesperson for East Kyoga, Michael Odongo said Mr Wabwire was arrested following a scuffle with the NRM mobilisers over voter bribery.

Upon his arrest, Mr Wabwire told journalists that he was moving around in the company of the Katatwi District FDC chairperson, Mr Charles Okure when they found NRM mobilisers distributing money. A scuffle ensued and police was called to intervene. Instead, he said, he ended up being arrested.
