Tororo. Production costs among grain dealers in two sub-counties of Tororo District are bound to come down after authorities last Thursday commissioned two agro-processing plants with a call on communities to increase production and sustain the plants.
The two plants, including a maize mill and a rice hauler, were constructed by the government with support from the African Development Bank under the Community Agricultural Infrastructural Improvement Programme (CAIIP) to help address issues of value addition on agricultural products so as to improve household incomes.
The maize milling machine in Mella Sub-county cost more than Shs450 million and the rice hauler in Kirewa Sub-county cost Shs470 million.

Beneficiaries challenged
While handing over the facilities to the beneficiary communities, the district chairperson, Mr Apollo Jaramogi, challenged the beneficiaries to ensure safety of the facilities. He appealed to local leaders to mobilise communities to increase production and ensure that their produce is processed by the plants.
The Tororo deputy chief administrative officer, Ms Pauline Epodoi, challenged the communities to own the facilities and ensure quality produce.

She called for trust and honesty during processing, packaging and pricing, adding that any falsification in the process may lead to loss of market.
Mr Andrew Asaya, the superintendent of works at Tororo district local government, said besides putting up processing plants, the programme extended the power grid and improved the road network to the two sub-counties.
