Tractor driver runs over mother of five as she picks spilled maize grains

The tractor driver identified only as Kennedy ran over the mother of five who had hidden by the roadside after collecting maize cobs that had dropped off the tractor trailer.

Fate can be cruel and hand someone a double tragedy and this is the misfortune that befell a mother struggling to fend for her five children in Nwoya District. For her pains to gather spilled maize from a tractor trailer to make ends meet, Ms Alice Akello was run over by a tractor on Tuesday from which she picked dropped maize cobs in Lungulu Sub-county. Akello was crashed by a tractor said to belong to Amatheon Agri Farm.

According to Lungulu Sub-county chairman Denis Atube, the tractor driver identified only as Kennedy ran over the mother of five, who had hidden by the roadside after collecting maize cobs that had dropped off the tractor trailer. Ms Anena Aweko, an aunt to the deceased, said famine that has ravaged several villages in the area, is to blame for the incident.
Nwoya District Police commander Moses Okello confirmed the incident, saying the suspect has handed himself over to the police and recorded a statement. In a revenge attack however, residents of Lungulu Sub-county burnt the tractor to ashes at Got Okwara village.

“Three people have been arrested in connection with the burning of the tractor. We also call upon the bereaved to remain calm as we resolve the matter,” said Mr Okello.
The corporate social responsibility officer at Amatheon Agri Farm, Ms Nancy Akumu, declined to comment on the matter saying she is not authorised to speak for the organisation.
