Bugiri- Two Police officers working at Bugiri Central Police Station were gunned down by thugs who took off with their guns, heightening tension about insecurity in the district.

The two officers identified as Muzamil Babale and Abdul Karim Tenywa were killed when the thugs ambushed them and took off with their AK-47 assault rifles.

The incident happened at Naminyagwe swamp in Kapyanga Sub-county in Bugiri, along the Bugiri Namutumba Road at around 6am yesterday.

The two officers are said to have been returning to the station from duty at the country home of the former Inspector General of Government (IGG), Justice Faith Mwondha in Naminyagwe village.

The bodies of the deceased officers were discovered by boda boda cyclists who found them soaked in blood.

The riders quickly notified the police at Bugiri.

The bodies of the officers had by press time been taken to Bugiri hospital for postmortem examination as part of the investigations.

The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, visited the scene of the shooting and Bugiri Police Station at around 10:30am yesterday.

Rampant incidences

The killings come less than two weeks after President Museveni visited the neighbouring Namayingo District and lashed out at police officers for “sleeping on the job”.

“Namayingo District has become a slaughter house where criminals are wantonly gunning down people,” Mr Museveni said at Namavundu village where he had gone to commiserate with the family of the late Buyinja Sub-county chairman, David Tito Okware, who was gunned down in Namayingo Town Council on February 1.
