Two burnt to death in Mityana inferno

A 55-year-old woman and her grandson have died in a fire that gutted a house in Mityana district.

The house was made of mud and wattle. According to police, the house belonged to Mityana diocese.

The incident occurred at about 3am this morning in Namukoze west LCI Zone, central division Mityana Municipality.

According to eye witnesses, the fire razed down the house and destroyed household items.

The deceased have been identified as Annet Nakabugo, 55, a peasant and a resident of the same village and her grandson Kabanda Nicolas, aged three and half years.

The deceased were asleep by the time the fire gutted the house, witnesses said.

According to the Wamala regional Police Spokesperson Mr Nobert Ochom, another grandson identified as Kalule Gideon, 4, escaped uninjured.

He reportedly escaped through a window after seeing the fire spreading in the house.

"Investigations have so far indicated that the fire started from a burning candle that the family forgot to put out when members were going to bed," Ochom said.

Police detectives visited the scene and retrieved the Bodies.

The bodies have been taken to Mityana referral hospital mortuary pending postmortem, police said.

In a related development, an unidentified man in his 30s believed to be mentally unstable reportedly drowned in a valley dam in Mityana district.

The incident was reported at Kuminamukaga Police Station yesterday.

"He allegedly drowned in a dam in the farm of Pastor Musinguzi Pilgrim of Kanyogoga LCI, Kigando s/c in Mubende district," Ochom said.

Police visited the scene and examined the bodies of the deceased before taking it to Mubende regional referral hospital for postmortem.
