Two killed in Mubende highway crash

Mubende.
Two people were knocked dead in an accident on Mubende -Mityana road yesterday morning.
The District Police Commander, Mr Moses Akena, said the deceased, a woman and her son, were travelling from Kyegegwa to Kampala in a taxi.
Mr Akena said they were knocked dead by a speeding car at Myanzi Trading Centre in Myanzi Sub-county as they were crossing the road.
Witness said the victims had requested the driver of the taxi to stop so that they could ease themselves.
Driver arrested
Mr Akena said the police arrested the driver who knocked them. Their bodies were taken to Mityana hospital.
He attributed most accidents on Mubende highway to careless driving and driving under influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile, three people were taken to Mubende hospital in critical condition after being knocked by a vehicle on Mubende Fort Portal road yesterday.
According to the officer in charge of traffic at Mubende Police Station, Mr Alex Mulamuzi, those injured are Mahoro Bugenia, Andrew Wassawa, 6, and a turn boy whose name had not yet been identified.
Police said the accident occurred when a driver of a truck, which was coming from Mubende to Kasambya, was trying to overtake a cyclist and failed to brake, ramming into roadside vendors.
Police are hunting the driver who fled immediately.
